Image 15: Deformations in foundation of a structure

Project:

The function of the foundation of a structure is to transfer the load of the structure to the load-bearing soil. Loaded soil deforms, and measurements, especially using optical methods and non-contact measurement, can observe the size of the deformations. The size of the deformations is closely related to the bearing capacity of the soil: the greater the deformation, the sooner the collapse will occur. The picture shows the distribution of deformations, where the shades of green, yellow and orange indicate, in order, from smaller to larger deformations at the moment before the ground gives way.

The picture was created as part of the laboratory tests for the doctoral dissertation of Adriana Brandis.
