The simplest problems in engineering are represented by elements produced from one single material without any irregularities or voids. Any irregularity or hole in a homogenous element requires a redistribution of stress in relation to the same element without irregularities. The more irregularities and the more uneven they are, the more complex the calculation. One of the experimental methods for determining stresses and deformations of very complex geometries is testing with a polariscope. Polariscope is a device that uses polarized light to reveal the distribution of stresses and strains. One such example is shown in the picture.
