„The rose“

Text written by: Jana Culej and Jelena Ban, Faculty of Biotechnology and Drug Development, University of Rijeka

Neural stem cells are widely used in investigations of the regeneration of the nervous system and have great potential in cell therapy. The rose is generated from neural stem cells that, when cultured on top of the fibroblasts, form 3D structures called neurospheres. Fibroblasts (rose leaves) and neural stem cells (rose petals) were fluorescently marked for vimentin (red), the intermediate filament protein of the cell cytoskeleton.

Jana Culej is a Master’s student of the graduate university study program “Biotechnology in Medicine” of the Faculty of Biotechnology and Drug Development (FABRI), and her supervisor, Assoc. Prof. Jelena Ban at the Laboratory for Molecular Neurobiology (FABRI) is investigating development and regeneration of the nervous system using neural stem cells.
