Unatoč smještaju duž obala Jadranskog mora, područje Sjevernog Jadrana u biogeografskom smislu pripada submediteranskoj vegetacijskoj regiji. Priradnost submediteranu posljedica je nekoliko čimbenika, uključujući relativno visoke godišnje količine padalina, oko 1500 mm, niže zimske temperature, utjecaj jakog zimskog vjetra bure, kao i smještaj na sjeveru Mediterana. Posljedično, klasična mediteranska vazdazelena vegetacija, uključujući vrste poput hrasta crnike, Quercus ilex, pojavljuje se primarno u zaštićenim i prostorno prilično ograničenim lokacijama. Upravo su okomite stijene kanjona Rječine jedna od mjesta gdje su se ovakvi termofilni relikti uspjeli zadržati, ukazujući na nekada toplije i suše klimatske uvjete.
Također, nepristupačne stijene kanjona Rječine s malo direktnog fizičkog utjecaja ljudi predstavljaju možda najočuvanija i najprirodnija staništa u urbanoj cjelini Rijeke, što dodatno govori o značaju Rječine i njezina kanjona za prirodnu baštinu Rijeke i okolice.
Despite its coastal location along the Adriatic, the Northern Adriatic region biogeographically belongs to sub-Mediterranean vegetation region. This classification arises from several factors, including its relatively high annual precipitation, approximately 1500 mm, lower winter temperatures, the influence of the strong winter wind known as the bora, as well as its positioning at the northern boundary of the Mediterranean. Consequently, the classic evergreen vegetation typical of Mediterranean areas, featuring species like Quercus ilex, is primarily found in sheltered and spatially rather restricted refugial sites. The vertical cliffs of the Rječina canyon are precisely one of the places where such thermophilic relicts have managed to survive, indicating previously warmer and drier climatic conditions.
Moreover, the inaccessible cliffs of the Rječina canyon, with minimal direct human impact, represent perhaps the most preserved and natural habitats within the urban area of Rijeka, further highlighting the importance of the Rječina and its canyon for the natural heritage of Rijeka and its surroundings.
